Zipingpu Dam is the another casualty in the Chinese earthquake. It is reported that up to 400 dams have been damaged due to the Chinese earthquake with Zipingpu Dam being the largest effected. Zipingpu Damn is located 50 kilometres from the epicentre, at Wenchuan. The shear force of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake dealt a severe blow to the dam and its power plant.

The hydroelectric power plant at Zippingpu Dam has been knocked out by the earthquake and is no longer working. This has had a knock-on effect in the area at large. The plant, located on the Minjiang River, supplies the vast majority of the electricity to the region. With the power plant not supplying electricity, rescue attempts in the region have been further hampered.

On hearing the news about the collapse of Zipingpu Dam, Chinese authorities dispatched 2000 army personnel to help in the repair efforts of the dam. After this and further investigation, the Chinese authorities declared that the damn is structurally stable and safe.
