What can stop the Duke of Earl?

What can stop the Duke of Earl?” you ask. Very little it seems.

Duke of Earl was first released by Gene Chandler in 1962 and was an instant hit. So much so that Chandler started to refer to himself as the Duke of Earl. The song is insanely repetative and, once you’ve heard it, it’s impossible to get out of your head. It has been dubbed the Earworm of the Century by the Royal Society for Mental Repetivation (the RSMR). For those who don’t know, an earworm is a tune which gets stuck in your head and repeats and repeats, driving you slowly or not so slowly insane.

The phrase ‘Duke of Earl’ is repeated 35 times during the song and, once subjected to the song, subjects become unable to dislodge it from their brain. The words “Duke, duke, duke, duke of earl, earl, earl’ keep revolving around their brain.

So, what can stop the Duke of Earl? Doctor Heinz von Rickenbacker Head Brain Musicologist at the RSMR suggest eating lots of bran. The bran, being fibrous, lodges in the brain’s music tract. Once it is firmly in place, any tuning going round in the brain is slowly strangled - with each repetition it gets further and further entwined in the brain until it can no longer move.

However, this is most definitely a long term solution, if Duke of Earl is replaying in your brain and you need to stop it immediately, there are some drastic measures that can be taken. One possibility is to delicately put a pencil in through your ear. It is important that you get the help of a responsible adult at this point - sticking a pencil into your ear requires careful and steady guidance lest the pencil burst your stirrups. Once the pencil is within your ear, start to hum the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Duke of Earl will become enraged by this initially. At this stage, it’s best to the Duke of Earl wear himself out. After a couple of minutes humming, the Duke of Earl should climb onto the tip of the pencil. At this stage, it is safe to withdraw the pencil. All traces of Duke of Earl should have stopped at this point. Wipe up any remaining remnants with ample rolls of tissue paper.

If you follow these steps, you shouldn’t have any problem making the Duke of Earl stop.
