McDonalds Free Chicken
Today McDonalds is giving away free fried chicken on a biscuit to all customers who buy a medium or large sized drink.
This move comes as McDonalds have seen a sharp rise in the popularity of chicken at other times of the day. They are betting that once customers have a taste of fried chicken at breakfast time, they’ll want to eat it for breakfast every day. The specific meals they are offering for free are the Southern Style Chicken Biscuit and the Southern Style Chicken Sandwhich.
Chicken for breakfast is not an entirely new idea. It has long been customary to serve chicken for breakfast in the South. It is yet to be seen whether the idea can be spread successfully to the North, but McDonalds are certainly brave in attempting it. It is not the first time that they have attempted to change America’s eating habits. When they first came out with the McGriddle (a combination of eggs or meat between two pancakes) many people were shocked and thought it would never catch on. However, it was popular and has become a regular favourite on the McDonalds menu. Will free McDonalds chicken at breakfast time be just as popular? Maybe.
It is yet to be seen how McDonald’s plans to make this move fit with their attempts to show themselves to be more health conscious. In recent years, they have been attacked as one of the major causes of Americans obesity problem, most prominently in Morgan Spurlock’s film Super-size Me. In reaction to this, McDonald’s has made a move towards offering more healthy options such as salad and fresh fruit. Offering free fried chicken for breakfast is unlikely to do them any favors as the attempt to convince the public, the press and the authorities that McDonalds are doing all the can to help tackle the obesity problem. Pressure groups are already calling McDonald’s move irresponsible.
