Amantadine

May 20, 2008 in News

Amantadine is an anti-viral drug that is most often used to tackle Parkinson’s Disease and flu.

Most recently, it has been used in China to combat the spread of avian flu (also referred to as bird flu) by giving it to chickens. This use of amantadine hcl has lead to a strain of bird flu becoming resistant to amantadine hydrochloride. As of now, the strains that have made their way west are not resistant to maantadine, so any such epidemic that should break out in the West may still be treatable with amantadine.

Amantadine in Parkisons Treatment

Amantidine is used in the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. However, it is not clear exactly how the drug works to combat Parkinsons. It is believed that it works to induce the nerve endings in the brain to release dopamine.

Amantadine is also being used to tackle ADHD and multiple sclerosis.

The man Eder H. Rojas stands accused of setting fire to the airplane’s bathroom whist it was in flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Regina, Saskatchewan. The fire caused smoke to billow from the bathroom and spread throughout the plane. Passengers and crew became aware of the smoke and panic quickly started to arise. Hysterical passengers had to be comforted by the flight crew. As soon as the fire was discovered, it was decided that the plane would have to land at Fargo airport.

Compas Airlines (and their parent company Northwest Airlines) have yet to make a statement regarding the fire on board the plane.

Once their, the 19 year old Edar Rojas was questioned by the FBI then arrested. The other passengers were also asked to give statements. Many of them were unable to fly on to their original destination and had to be put up for the night in a local hotel in Fargo.
